I stumbled upon this excellent essay on the intolerance of those who claim to be the most tolerant, and how this intolerance is, um, tolerated. It's worth at least a cursory look.
There will always be extremists on all sides and there will always be those that look for it, pick it out and then say they are constantly under attack. This same article could have been written about gays or any other group that someone doesn't approve of.
So what.
BTW: I recently read Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series. It was excellent.
"Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."
-1 Co 15:1-6
"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." -James 1:27
